Carrying out an aquathermal energy project depends largely on the existing enabling environment in one specific region or country. The AquaCOM project has carefully assessed the state of the art of aquathermal energy (AQE) in the five partner countries - Belgium (including specific assessment for each of its three regions), France, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands - and developed an online tracker to access this information easily.

Explore the Tracker

Through a traffic light grading system, the tracker provides a clear overview of each country's level of advancement in supporting and integrating AQE into national energy systems and policies. For each country, the tracker offers an overall qualitative assessment of its approach to AQE, along with evaluations across the following categories:

  • Policy and regulation framework
  • Financial support and investment readiness
  • Permitting and procedural challenges
  • Public stakeholder engagement
  • Future growth and sustainability potential
  • Current AQE deployment and infrastructure
Key learnings per country

Find in the following infographic key takeaways per target country (and Belgian region), highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in terms of aquathermal energy implementation and existing support structures.

A joint research

Led by the University of Oldenburg, the tool has been developed through a joint collaboration across AquaCOM partners.

It has been developed following a clear methodology, which is accurately explained on this page.
