This year’s German event Hamburger Horizonte invited the public to explore the world through the lens of water - a theme that could not have been more fitting for a deep dive into aquathermal energy. Supported by the Körber Foundation, the event proved how inspiring it can be when science opens its doors to society.
Hosted by the Hamburg World Economic Institute (HWWI), the evening brought together experts from the Interreg projects WaterWarmth and AquaCOM for a joint presentation.
Dr. Anja Behrendt (WaterWarmth, HWWI) guided the audience through the technical and economic possibilities of drawing clean, renewable energy from water bodies - illustrating how this underused resource could help reshape local heating systems.
Lea Blasey, from our partner University of Oldenburg, shifted the focus to the legal and political landscape, explaining current regulations as well as opportunities and challenges for emerging energy communities.
What followed was an energetic discussion with engaged citizens, whose questions ranged from practical implementation to long-term societal impact. The exchange highlighted that the future of sustainable energy is not only a scientific challenge, but a shared community project.
