On 23 September 2025, we hosted the webinar titled “Policies and Permits: Identifying Barriers and Opportunities in Aquathermal Energy Projects”. Our team from the University of Oldenburg presented the results of their recent research into permitting procedures, governance structures, and policy frameworks in the North-West European region.

Lea Blasey and Catherina Saftig, from the University of Oldenburg, introduced the AquaCOM's AQE Tracker, which is used to assess national readiness, and shared insights from best-practice cases in Switzerland. The session revealed that clear regulation, stakeholder engagement and targeted funding can accelerate deployment, but also highlighted persistent hurdles such as unclear boundaries of responsibility and gaps in public awareness.
